Q&A with SIGGRAPH 2015 Technical Papers Chair Doug James

Technical Papers chair Doug James shares his passion for the program in an exclusive interview below.

Reminder: Technical Papers submission form and abstract are due 22:00 UTC/GMT, 19 January 2015. The final paper is due 22:00 UTC/GMT, 20 January 2015.

How did you become involved with SIGGRAPH?

My first SIGGRAPH was in `99 when I published a paper as a graduate student at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. Since then, I've continued to be very excited about interactive physics simulation--and graphics and animation research in general--and found SIGGRAPH to be a great community for advancing those ideas. As a computer graphics professor, it is the natural venue for our research.

What motivated you to become Technical Papers Chair?

SIGGRAPH has always been the primary venue for my research activities, and I have been a long-time volunteer in the review process of the Technical Papers program, having reviewed hundreds of papers. I was honored to be asked to be the Technical Papers Chair: it's a great opportunity for me to help maintain and improve the widely respected SIGGRAPH review process established by our community.

What advice would you give to someone who is interested in submitting content for the first time?

For new submitters to the Technical Papers program, I recommend reading the Technical Papers "call for papers" and related website content. In particular, there is an extensive Technical Papers FAQ that addresses many common questions. The basic recipe for showcasing your work in the technical program is to have a novel idea, explain it clearly in written form, and to provide evidence (be it data, images or video) to help support claims that your method improves upon the state of the art in some specific ways. Understanding and citing related works, and being able to explain the pros/cons of your approach, are also critical components. Getting feedback from experienced colleagues is also a good way to improve your submission.

What makes this program different from the others at SIGGRAPH?

The SIGGRAPH Technical Papers program is the premier international forum for disseminating new scholarly work in computer graphics and interactive techniques. We focus on the technical details underlying a broad spectrum of computer graphics innovations, and seek to document and disseminate these advances in all their glory.

Outside of Technical Papers, what other areas of the conference are you particularly excited about?

Everything. Seriously. I strongly recommend trying to look at a little of everything if you can, especially if it's something less familiar or different for you--come for the technical papers, but stay for the art and games. Things always change, and you never know what you will see next year.

How has SIGGRAPH influenced you personally and professionally?

We're inseparable. It's given me a lifelong venue for practicing and experiencing exciting technical and artistic innovations.

SIGGRAPH 2014 Highlights from Vancouver

SIGGRAPH Technical Papers Fast Forward was a popular session on Sunday evening.
VANCOUVER, British Columbia - SIGGRAPH 2014 returned to Vancouver, Canada, for its 41st conference and exhibition. From 10-14 August, 14,045 artists, research scientists, gaming experts and developers, filmmakers, students, and academics from 50 U.S. states and 75 countries gathered to experience cutting-edge computer graphics and interactive techniques. There were 6,156 participants from the host country of Canada.

The SIGGRAPH Exhibition ran from 12-14 August and attracted 175 exhibitors.
The conference boasted more than 40,000 sq. ft. of exhibit space featuring 175 participating companies - an increase from the 2013 conference in Anaheim, California. Eighteen countries were represented on the exhibit floor, 44% of which are based outside of the U.S. - including 28 companies from Canada. Furthermore, 25% of the exhibitors were first-timers, which was the highest percentage in four years.

Dave Shreiner
"This year’s exceptional education, numerous networking opportunities, and mind-blowing technological advances appealed to everyone," said Dave Shreiner, SIGGRAPH 2014 Conference Chair. "SIGGRAPH 2014 offered an incredible exhibition experience, innovative and inspiring content, and celebrated the impact that graphics and technology can have in every day life. Finally, the city of Vancouver was amazing - from the mayor’s office to the convention centre to the economic commission to the tourism bureau."

An impressive 1,533 speakers and contributors participated in the conference through a variety of talks, sessions, panels, papers, presentations, tutorials, and screenings.

Highlights from SIGGRAPH 2014 included:

The impactful keynote presentation by Not Impossible Labs co-founder Elliot Kotek shared a simple message: “Help One. Help Many.” Kotek showed how technology can have an immense impact on humanity by sharing stories of Not Impossible Labs’ efforts including Project Daniel, which outfitted Sudanese amputees with new prosthetic limbs thanks to 3D printing technology.

Thierry Frey (center), SIGGRAPH Emerging Technologies Chair, leads the Vancouver mayor on a tour.
Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson made an appearance, addressing members of the press and visiting SIGGRAPH 2014’s Emerging Technologies venue. He expressed his delight that emerging technologies and computer graphics have caused "an influx of talent and great people to our city" as well as thousands of jobs for its citizens. The Vancouver Economic Council sponsored the Emerging Technologies area. The virtual reality experience “Birdly” won the Laval Virtual award and the AR/VR competition.
Jerome Solomon served as the 2014 Computer Animation Festival Director.
The Computer Animation Festival presented the world's most innovative, accomplished, and amazing creators of digital gaming, film, and video. The festival received more than 450 juried submissions in 2014. SIGGRAPH 2014 Computer Animation Festival award winners included:

SIGGRAPH 2014 Recap: Day 1

SIGGRAPH 2014, the 41st International Conference and Exhibition on Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques, made its return to Vancouver, Canada, when it officially opened its doors to attendees on Sunday, 10 August. The first day of the conference featured several Talks, Panels, Birds of a Feather events, Studio Courses and StudioXperience interviews, not to mention Technical Papers Fast Forward, ACM SIGGGRAPH Theater Events and Art Gallery.

First-Time Attendee Guide to SIGGRAPH 2014

The SIGGRAPH Technical Papers Fast Forward is always a "must attend" event and a great preview for the week ahead.
We've all been there .... staring overwhelmed at all the great SIGGRAPH content and trying to figure out how in the world to tackle it all. In fact, the SIGGRAPH 2014 Conference Chair Dave Shreiner was once a first-time attendee many moons (a couple of decades ago).

"When I arrived at my first show, SIGGRAPH 1989 in Boston, I was in total awe of what I saw there.  I didn’t have a plan for the show, so I just wandered around for three days soaking in everything I could," said Dave Shreiner, SIGGRAPH 2014 Conference Chair.

He continued, "Computers for generating real-time graphics were just getting to the size of refrigerators, and 50 thousand triangles a second was the speed record, but the most enjoyable aspect of the show was sharing ideas and knowledge with everyone there. Regardless of where you’re in your career, stop and talk with your fellow attendees - you’ll be amazed at what you can learn! But be sure to come with a plan."

With his help and others, we put together this focus to help you tackle your first SIGGRAPH. And by all means ask anyone for help especially at the SIGGRAPH 2015 booth or at any of the many networking events.

Whether between sessions or at any of the official SIGGRAPH events, networking with peers is a big part of the SIGGRAPH experience that will impact your professional and personal life for years to come.

SIGGRAPH 2014 Art Gallery: Acting in Translation

The SIGGRAPH 2014 Art Gallery will gather and present 14 outstanding, critical, and innovative unique works and projects, incorporating its theme, “Acting in Translation.” While the essential aim of the Art Gallery is to provide a deeper insight into the relationships within art, science, technology, research, and societal developments, “Acting in Translation” concentrates on strong content and criticality in these works and projects, conveyed through the use of advanced technologies.

Curated by Basak Senova, “Acting in Translation” aims to revolve around the readings, responses, and perceptions of ‘the act of translation’ as a productive tool based on criticality. The participating artists are Paul L. Stout, Rachele Riley, Yunsil Heo, Hyunwoo Bang, Joseph Farbrook, Yoichi Ochiai, Yunsil Heo, Hyunwoo Bang, Inmi Lee, Kyle McDonald, Zohar Kfir, Sam Blanchard, Kirk Cameron, Robert Redfern, Sergio Bernales, Bo Li, Michelle Will, Hung-Ching Chang, Kelsey Farenholtz, Brandon Deaguero, Timmy Meyer, John Mooring, Ali Butt, Speculatorum Oculi, Erik Brunvand, Alon Chitayat, Jeff Ong, Emilio Vavarella, Fito Segrera, Burak Arikan, and Ed Konowal/GraphicsNet.

The Art Gallery will also feature one panel and four Talks with the artists along with an afternoon networking reception.

“The 2014 Art Gallery represents no single or homogenous approach, but a diverse display of artistic strategies," said Basak Senova, SIGGRAPH 2014 Art Gallery Chair. “Translation, as a term and as a tool, generates numerous potential fields for art production, which is why we selected it as this year’s theme and are thrilled to have these outstanding works and projects.”

The 2014 Art Gallery will take place in the West Building, Exhibit Hall A at the Vancouver Convention Centre. Access to this program can be purchased for as low as $75 USD at s2014.siggraph.org. A special opportunity for meeting with the artists will occur on Tuesday, 12 August during an afternoon reception sponsored by Leonardo/ISAST and The MIT Press.

Highlights from the SIGGRAPH 2014 Art Gallery:

Looking Glass Time
Artist: Yoichi Ochiai

“Looking Glass Time” aims to represent social media activities and their timelines with physical clock animation, without any recording media.

The Internet SteamGauge
Artist: Ed Konowal / GraphicsNet

Internet usage is typically measured in Mb/s (Megabits per second). “The Internet SteamGauge” takes the same data and translates it to a real-world gauge.

The Evolution of Science
Artist: Rachele Riley

The Evolution of Silence addresses the scale of damage brought about by 41 years of nuclear testing at the Nevada Test Site. The Web-based archive presents a non-linear map and interpretation of the area’s destruction, and an opportunity to explore this restricted desert landscape.

SIGGRAPH 2014 Call for Submissions

SIGGRAPH 2014 Call For Submissions

Share Your Talents at SIGGRAPH 2014!

Present your work at SIGGRAPH’s 41st International Conference and Exhibition on Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques: the premier showcase for creating experiences that wow the crowds and stimulate the senses. Taking place 10-14 August 2014 at the Vancouver Convention Centre in Vancouver, Canada. SIGGRAPH 2014 welcomes your technical skills and creative talents, ensuring that this year’s event will be the best yet!
Whether you are an industry veteran or student, join your fellow computer graphic artists and scientists and share your talents at SIGGRAPH 2014. This year, we are also encouraging submissions focusing on mobile devices! Please consider submitting your work to our SIGGRAPH Mobile program if you are creatively making use of a tablet, smart phone, or any other mobile device for augmented and virtual reality, location-based interactions, collaboration, visualization, or anything else you wish to show us. While there is something for everyone at the conference, there is nothing without you and your contributions.
Every piece submitted to SIGGRAPH 2014 through the Call for Submissions is reviewed by a highly qualified jury composed of top practitioners in the relevant field. Because we want each jury to have the time to review each piece carefully, submission deadlines generally are several months ahead of the conference itself. All the submission deadlines are strictly enforced, so be sure to plan accordingly.

New for SIGGRAPH 2014 - All contributors to the conference will be required to use ACM's rights management system to grant the necessary permissions rather than SIGGRAPH's information system (SIS), which you used if you previously submitted to a SIGGRAPH conference.  You will still use SIS for creating submissions, but there will be an additional step of granting permissions in ACM--SIGGRAPH's parent organization--system. The ACM right management form includes permission to record and distribute audio and video recordings of presentations made at the conference for the purposes of distribution by ACM and SIGGRAPH. For submissions other than Technical Papers, this is a permission and release form, which allows you to retain the copyright. For technical papers, authors will have the choice of transferring the copyright to ACM, or selecting an exclusive publishing license, or an Open Access license. Complete instructions are available at the SIGGRAPH 2014 web site. Please review the policy before submitting.

Take A Tour of the SIGGRAPH 2013 Art Gallery

SIGGRAPH 2013 Art Gallery Chair Victoria Szabo from Duke University, takes you on a high-level tour of this year's art exhibition in Anaheim  The Art Gallery’s 2013 theme, XYZN: Scale, draws attention to a key critical affordance of computer-based authorship: the ability to iteratively scale our digital representations at will: in-out-up-down, back and forth, + and -. These core functions enable us to change size and location over time, and at different degrees of resolution.  This is a great high-level tour of that content.

You Are Going Where?

Many who are on the outside of SIGGRAPH 2013 looking in may now be asking you the question, "Where are you going for the next week?"  Well, here's a simple landing page you can send them with the following text:

"I'm going to a convergence place where some of the most brilliant and thought-provoking minds on this planet come together for five days of mind-blowing sessions, events, and activities.  It's basically a year squeezed into less than a week.  And, oh yeah, by the way, they actually make insanely brilliant, delightful, incredible content like this:"

Now, they still may not totally understand where you are going, but they will be jealous.  For those that are SIGGRAPH veterans: safe travels, sleep on the plane, and see you soon.  For those that are coming and are new to SIGGRAPH, be sure to attend this or stop by the SIGGRAPH 2014 booth for advice or ask a student volunteer (look for the "Ask Me" button).

Housing and Transportation Information

Still need to plan your stay in Los Angeles? SIGGRAPH can help. Visit the SIGGRAPH web site for a list of some available Los Angeles hotels. Rates will vary from the official conference rates as the housing deadline has passed.

All changes to existing reservations should now be made directly with your assigned hotel.

Hotel-Convention Center Shuttle Service
SIGGRAPH 2012 provides complimentary shuttle service between many conference hotels and the Los Angeles Convention Center. Attendees who used the SIGGRAPH 2012 hotel reservation system to make reservations at hotels served by the SIGGRAPH 2012 shuttle buses will receive a shuttle wristband when they check in. The JW Marriott, Figueroa and Luxe Hotels are considered walk hotels.  Attendees who did not book through the SIGGRAPH 2012 reservation system and wish to use the shuttle service can purchase wristbands at the SIGGRAPH Store.

Airport Shuttle Bus Discounts
SIGGRAPH 2012 has partnered with Super Shuttle to offer transportation to and from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).

Shared Ride Van: $13 per passenger (up to 9 passengers) Town Car Service - $63 per sedan (up to 4 passengers). These discounted rates are valid from five days before the conference to five days after it closes.

Book by phone at 800.258.3826 (toll free) or +1.310.222.5500, extension 4. To receive the discount, you must mention the SIGGRAPH 2012 discount code: PK7AU. Or you can book online at the Super Shuttle web site.

Drivers accept cash and all major credit cards for all transfers.

If you book your shuttle reservation through the SIGGRAPH 2012 web site, you earn miles on American Airlines, United Airlines, Delta, and Frontier Airlines.

Cancellations or changes for Shared Ride van transfers and sedan cars made four hours prior to the scheduled day of transfer will not incur a cancellation fee.  Cancellation or changes made within four hours of the scheduled day transfer, or no-show, will be charged the estimated cost that was quoted at the time of the reservation (mini-buses need 72 hours for cancellation).

Safety Tip
When walking around any conference city be certain to remove your badge and secure it in a safe place.  Displaying your badge in public areas outside a convention center advertises that you are probably not local and may make yourself more vulnerable to a crime or aggressive panhandling.
